Metal detectors and searching for gold?

Has anyone had much success doing this? Whats the best way to go about trying it? I bought my husband a metal detector for his birthday and we'd like to give looking for gold a shot. Thanks!

Where are you located?

I have a commercial operation that you could try.

There are a lot of nuggets being found with metal detectors in the western parts of the U.S.

It's important that a person purchase the best detector they can afford, and select one that is soley designed to detect gold. Multi-function detectors engineered to find "treasure", "coins", and "relics" are far less sensitive in any particular function because all the functions share circuitry.

You don't say what make or model of detector you acquired, but the best one's imo for gold are produced by MineLab and Fisher ("Gold bug-2").

It is important that a person understand how his/her detector works and reacts to different metals. The best way to learn this is to place and then detect in the yard at home, different types and sizes of gold and other metals. The detector will report what's beneath it but for success, the operator has to be able to interprep it. Practice, practice, practice, is the best advice I can offer. It's good for a "greenhorn" to hook up with experienced people, because they can provide information that otherwise might take a few years of experience to acquire.

Tell your husband that he wants to search areas where gold has been found in the past becaus gold is still there today. The old-timers didn't have the sophisticated equipment that's available today.

Tell him to slowly and methodically work wet and dry river & stream beds
along with the high points adjacent to the beds, and tell him when he finds a nugget to dilligently work the area because most frequently by far, where there's one nugget there are also others.

A detector with a coil and lower unit designed to be used under water is a real plus for searching wet stream beds.

Here in Colorado most prospectors prefer the White's GMT ("goldmaster") for nugget shooting. This detector works especially well in Colorado's highly mineralized mountains areas. In AZ a Minelabs might work better for you (I hope you have deep pockets). The White's runs about $700. If you want a more multi-functional detector consider the White's MXT.
